Self Portraits

Promptography, photography challenges, and photography prompts are all synonyms for the same thing—looking at every day things from a new or different perspective and capturing it on camera (ideas below). In common photo challenges, self portraits are frequently listed as the first of many ideas (selfies don’t count). Though I haven’t mastered the process yet, I did figure out how to take a self portrait with decent results. The trick for most people is to get the camera to prefocus on something that is on the same “plane” as your face with a low aperture setting for a gorgeous bokeh effect (blurry background).

In the photos below, my camera was set on a tripod and focused on the front of the tree, Once the camera settings were properly adjusted, I positioned myself and used my camera’s remote control and two-second timer so I had a moment to adjust before triggering the remote.

Besides getting the camera to focus correctly, it’s challenging to relax and remember how to pose as if you were the actual client! I kept pausing and thinking “what would I tell my client right now?” Next time, I’ll experiment with the “burst” setting so I can take more than one photo at a time. Though the process was a bit awkward at first, it was a fun and humbling experience and I love being in the woods taking photos!
